SCAM ALERT: Fake FBI Agents Are Spoofing FBI Phone Numbers

🚨 AIGISHIELD SCAM ALERT — FBI warning issued August 19, 2026.

What’s happening: The FBI Boston Division is warning about a new government-impersonation scam in which criminals spoof the FBI Boston main telephone number and try to move victims to an encrypted messaging application.

How it works: The scam may begin with someone pretending to represent a financial institution and claiming your information was used to open an account connected to illegal firearm purchases. The victim is then transferred to a fake FBI special agent. A later call can appear to come from the real FBI Boston number. The scammer may provide a fake name and badge number and insist that communications remain confidential.

Warning signs: An unexpected law-enforcement call; threats or frightening allegations; demands for personal or banking information; requests for payment; instructions to use an encrypted messaging app; or demands that you keep the conversation secret.

Protect yourself: Hang up. Do not send money or provide sensitive information. Verify any claimed government contact independently using contact information you locate yourself. The FBI says it will not call or email private citizens to demand payment, threaten arrest, request sensitive information, or ask them to communicate through an encrypted application.
