What’s happening

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General is warning consumers about a new phishing campaign impersonating MyChart, the patient portal used by many hospitals and health-care providers. Scam emails and text messages offer recipients a supposed reward called a ‘MyChart Medicare Kit.’ The Attorney General’s Office says no such program or reward exists.

How the scam works

The fraudulent message tries to get the recipient to click a malicious link. The goal is to steal passwords, verification codes, and personal information that can allow criminals to gain access to a patient’s MyChart account or use the information for additional fraud.

Who is being targeted

Patients who use MyChart or receive communications that appear to come from a hospital, medical provider, Medicare-related service, or patient portal.

Warning signs

• An unexpected email or text offering a free ‘MyChart Medicare Kit’ or other unsolicited reward. • A message asking you to click a link to claim a benefit, verify your account, fix a problem, or unlock access. • Requests for passwords, one-time verification codes, or other sensitive information. • Instructions to move to a computer or another device to complete a supposed verification process. • An ‘unsubscribe’ link inside a suspicious message — the Attorney General warns that link may also be malicious.

What consumers should do

Do not reply, click links, open attachments, or use an unsubscribe button in a suspicious MyChart message. Access your patient portal only through the official MyChart app or the portal link provided directly by your medical team. Never provide passwords or verification codes by email, text, or phone. If you are unsure, contact your healthcare provider using contact information you obtained independently.
